Togolese striker Emmanuel Adebayor might be on his way to join English Premier League side Sunderland based on current happenings at the club.
Sunderland were handed Adebayor but the club refused to sign him even on a free transfer. Reports making the rounds say Adebayor might make the move to Sunderland after the player’s move to French giant Lyon broke down. Despite lacking top striking options, Sunderland are reportedly not keen on adding Adebayor, but they might be forced to with the events at the club.
First choice striker Jermain Defoe reacted after the loss to Crystal Palace. The Englishman scored a brace to put Sunderland ahead. However, Palace equalized and won the game 3-2. Defoe called on the club not to allow another relegation drama at the end of the season. Coach David Moyes signed former Everton player Victor Anichebe but the player is yet to make a start as he works on his fitness.
When Defoe took a slight knock, the result was apparent during the EFL game against QPR. The striker was 18-year old, Joel Asoro. The Swede tried his best, but it was evident that he was far from the required standard. Given the partnership of Defoe and Adebayor, Moyes might be forced to add him to the ranks. However, the former Spurs and Gunner striker would have to improve on his attitude.
Andre Villas-Boas and Harry Redknapp were reluctant to pair the players, but they turned out quite a handful for defenders. Even veteran player Brad Friedel commended the partnership, saying: “When we have played with two upfront, Jermain has really thrived on it, as he can save his energy for when he is inside the box. That is when it really matters for us.”
The partnership of the pair in 29 games ended in 21 wins, with Defoe scoring 16 goals and Adebayor getting 12 past the goalkeeper. Moyes might be forced to reconsider an eventual possibility of the pair in light of Sunderland’s Premier League hopes.
