Tottenham Hotspur have retained the services of veteran goalkeeper Brad Friedel by signing him on to a new one year contract extension as well as handing him an ambassadorial role at the club which will see him promote Spurs in his homeland at the United States of America.
The former United States National Men’s Team or USMNT goalkeeper was out of contract in the summer but Spurs have decided to retain his services by a further one year as back up for Frenchman Hugo Lloris.
According to an official announcement by the club, Spurs said the commitments of Friedel will include a far greater involvement in the Global Coaching Program that the club have in place already.
The American has over 450 appearances during his time at the Premier League but made just one appearance for Spurs last season with Llloris cementing his place as the club’s first choice keeper.
Brad Friedel joined Spurs on a free transfer from Aston Villa in the summer of 2011 but for one and half season, he has mainly been an understudy for the French number one.
At 43 years of age, this might just be the last professional season for the American in England where he has played for the likes of Liverpool, Blackburn Rovers and Aston Villa before moving to North London with Spurs.
The official website also noted his contribution across four clubs in the Premier League, where he has spent a total of seventeen seasons after moving from the United States.
Brad Friedel has won 82 caps for his country and played in the 2002 FIFA World Cup as the country’s first choice keeper as well. He has almost seventy appearances for the club as of now and will hope to get some more under his belt before calling it quits.
